Q. 15. What is tetanus neonatorum ? How can you prevent tetanus neonatorum ?
Tetanus neonatorum :- Tetanus of the newborn in the neonatal period is known as neonatal tetanus or tetanus neonatorum, This occurs in neonates due to infection of the umbilical stump caused by dressing it with drug or dusting powder, cutting of the cord with unclean, unsterilized blade, knife or scissor, tieing with unsterilized thread.
Prevention of tetanus neonatorum :-
1. Immunization of non- immune pregnant women by 2 dose of TT.
2. Measures should be taken during delivery :-
(i) Delivery should be done under complete aseptic condition.
(ii) Delivery should be performed under the direct supervision of a trained birth attendant (TBA) and not by some indigenous dia.
(iii) Introduction of hygienic principle into the dressing of the umbilical cord.
(iv) Introduction of hygienic principle into the dressing of the umbilical stump.
3. Measures should be taken after child birth :-
(i) During neonatal and positional period the child should be given special care, so that due to poor standard of sanitary environment the baby does not get tetanus.
(ii) The mother should maintain a high standard of purpose hygiene.
4. Other measures :-
(i) Encouragement of health centre and hospital deliveries.
(ii) Proper training and equipping of the village midwivo (dias) and MCH workers in the area.
(iii) Health education :- Particularly education of the mother is very important regarding

- Proper and handlings of the umbilical cord, stump & change of cord dressing.
- Maintenencance of proper and good midwifery sanitation.
