Food borne disease :- The term food borne disease is defined as “ a disease usually either infections or toxic in nature caused by agents that enter the body through the ingestion of food”
 Examples of food borne intoxication :-
1. Due to naturally occurring toxins in some foods:-
(i) Lathyrism
(ii) Endemic ascitis
2. Due to toxin produced by certain bacteria :-
(i) Botulism
(ii) Staphylococcal food poisoning
3. Due to toxins produced by some fungi
(i) Aflatoxin
(ii) Ergot
(iii) Fusarium toxins
4. Food borne chemical poisoning :-
a. Heavy metal e.g., mercury (usually in fish), Cadmium (in certain sefish) and  lead (in canned food).
b. Oils, petroleum derivatives and solvents (e, g, trycresyn phosphate)
c. Migrant chemicals from package material
d. Asbestos
e. Pesticide residues (DDT, BHC)
